Canton, OH- The Rainbow Repertory Company and Coming Together Stark County announce the production of “ ‘Listening In’ American History 1809 – 2010.” The play will be performed by the Rainbow Repertory Company actors on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 7 p.m. in Cable Recital Hall in the Cultural Center for the Arts at 1001 Market Avenue North in Canton. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students.

“ ‘Listening In’” is a play for all ages interested in history in the U.S. However, it is especially beneficial for students, as it was inspired by the realization that a majority of today’s students are not aware of the history portrayed in the play. The play was first commissioned by Coming Together Stark County in 2009 and was written by Lois DiGiacomo-Jacobson. It covers a one hundred year period as told through the perspectives of renowned historical figures such as Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, W.E.B. Du Bois, Dorothy Height, Mahalia Jackson and Malcolm X interacting together. A discussion with the actors and playwright will be held after the performance and study guides will be made available to those interested.

The stage format gives a unique element to the presentation of history. “We can best learn about history from those who made it,” states DiGiacomo, “and listening in on their conversations gives a perspective not possible with internet searches, lectures or slide shows.”

The Rainbow Repertory Company is a non-profit traveling troupe of professional dramatists and playwrights creating theater for education and entertainment. They serve area schools, social services agencies and community organizations. The Rainbow Repertory Company was established in 1994 by Lois DiGiacomo with the mission of advancing the community through the arts. The RRC writes client-specific plays and programs, and is funded through the continuing support of proceeds from the Canton Cabaret Dinner Theatre.

LISTENING IN…An Historical Chat will have its third annual performance February 23rd at 7 pm at Cable Recital Hall in the Canton Cultural Center 1001 Market Avenue North. This play was originally commissioned by COMING TOGETHER STARK COUNTY and written by Lois DiGiacomo, playwright/founder of the Rainbow Repertory Company.

“We can best learn about history from those who made it,” states DiGiacomo, “and listening in on their conversations gives a perspective not possible with internet searches, lectures or slide shows.” Those chatting together in this play are Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Mahalia Jackson, Susan B.
A play based on the true story of a female editor and a New York City fire captain whom she helped to write eight eulogies for the men he lost on 9/11, ‘The Guys’ was written just after the national tragedy for the NYC stage and starred Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray.

Canton City Law Director Joe Martuccio, no stranger to the Canton stage, plays the N.Y. Fire Captain. Canton native Deb Fezelle, a Julliard graduate and long-time NYC resident, plays the writing instructor who helps him write eulogies for his men. The play is heartfelt, emotional and changes audience members forever.

Everyone who knows a fireman should see this play, but more importantly, everyone who has never known a fireman NEEDS to see this play. “After seeing this play, you will never pass a fire station, hear a fire siren or see a picture of a fireman the same way again!” exclaims The Guys Producer/Director Lois DiGiacomo.

The first performance will take place on September 7 at 7 p.m. at Fieldcrest, 1346 Easthill Street, SE in North Canton. Tickets are $20 and include light refreshments. Call Fieldcrest at 330-966-2222 for reservations. The second performance is September 9 at Canton Fire Station No. 4 on Cleveland Avenue at 25th Street NW. Tickets are $10 or $7.50 for members of safety forces. Call 330-456-7397 for reservations. More information is available at www.rainbowrep.com.
